Lesson 6: The Eldership
Series: Letters To Young Evangelists - 1 Timothy, Titus, 2 TimothyIn this first seesion for our class, we elected to jump ahead to Lesson 6 to begin a more thorough survey of the qualifications for the eldership in light of our congregation's current introspective search for qualified men that may be appointed as our elders.
This lesson begins with several preliminary observations for 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9 including: the force of "It is a trustworthy statement" (1 Timothy 3:1), one of the main reasons Timothy and Titus were working where they were working being the appointment of elders, whether or not it is proper to use the term "office" in regards to the eldership, the required nature of each qualification, the stewardship of elders, and the difference between the qualifications that are somewhat relative in measurement (e.g. hospitality) and those that are more absolute in measurement (e.g. husband of one wife). After addressing these preliminary considerations, we began our survey of the qualifications discussing aspiration, desire, and viglance/temperance.
