In chapter 13, God tells Jeremiah to take a loincloth and bury it near the Euphrates River. He then commands him after a time to dig it back up. As the cloth is ruined, so God says His people are ruined. In chapter 14, Jeremiah pleads with God on behalf of the people and offers excuses for the degeneration of the people. God accepts none of these as an excuse and says that, as a result of their total commitment to evil, He will destroy the people.
