Dust And Glory
The special emphasis in Genesis 2:7 is the detail as to man’s nature. We are given the information that God formed man of the dust of the earth and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life (2:7). Therefore, man is a combination of what is low and what is high. On the one hand, man is described as being formed from the dust of the ground – an image of lowliness, though not evil. One emphasis is the frailty and transitoriness of God’s creation. On the other hand, man has been breathed into by God, an image of glory.
